A learning plan is created by choosing curriculum in four subjects: language arts, math, science, and social studies / history. Each of these subjects become a “course” when entered into SDS (the program you will be using to keep track of your child’s learning plan). There are many choices when it comes to choosing curriculum. Choosing curriculum can be overwhelming for new families, so with our existing families help, we have made the following list of their favorite choices. These choices are tried and true, and in most cases we already have courses for them in SDS, making starting your learning plan easy. All courses in SDS were written and approved by certified teacher advisors. If you choose a curriculum that isn’t currently on the list below or in SDS, an advisor will write a learning plan for you.
One of our favorite curricula is Bookshark, a literature based curriculum. It is a full curriculum for all subjects. If your not familiar with Bookshark visit their website: Bookshark to learn more!
Whether you are looking for something to start on now, or need something to supplement the curriculum you chose, we’ve composed the following list of free curriculum resources. There are some amazing resources out there for free!
We often are asked, what is in a course? Each course in the learning plan (as described above) contains state standards that will be met with the completion of the curriculum, a detailed description of the curriculum, and an activities section which details the lessons in a chapter by chapter format, sometimes laid out week-by-week or month by month. Below are a few examples of courses, one each in Language Arts, Math, Science, and History. Keep in mind grade range differences – middle school learning plans will be more comprehensive in their coverage of standards and activites vs. elementary plans. (Links below coming soon!)
All About Reading Level 1 (grade 1), AOPS Beast Academy (Math) Level 4 (grade 4), Home Science Tools Accelerate (6-8th grade), Story of the World 1 (K-8)
At any time during the school year if you find a curriculum isn't working with your child, you can switch curricula and your child's learning plan can be updated with your advisors approval. We firmly believe that each child is unique and certain curricula work better with some children vs. others and finding one that works is often like finding a good shoe that fits - it may take several tries, but once you find it your child will be on a path to success! With the knowledge our advisors have, along with our library of resources and the ability to network among other OPHC families we will help you find a curriculum that works.
